Most medical and mental health professionals are on the same page these days when it comes to recognizing the therapeutic benefits of spending time in nature. Have you ever spent time outdoors and noticed a peaceful feeling or a sense of mental clarity? For me personally, time in nature is a major part of my lifestyle and wellbeing.
Here are a few ways to enjoy nature:
Go on a mindful nature walk. All this means is to allow yourself to be present and in the moment while you are enjoying the experience. You can inhale for 4 steps and exhale for six steps. You can collect nature treasures that catch your eye and use them for an art project. You can look around and notice all of the colors around you. You can find a place to lay and watch the clouds drift by or make shapes out of them.
Take off your shoes and socks and feel the Earth below you.
Hug a tree. Seriously! There’s research around the therapeutic benefits of this!
If you are at the ocean, watch the waves ebb and flow.
If you are by a river, watch the water drift by. Watch a leaf or a stick float by – symbolic of observing our thoughts come and go, rather than letting them stick around in our mind.
